Tae Kwon Do News at Kaleidoscope!

On May 30th, two Kaleidoscope students (Nathan Knapp and Amelia Knapp) and one Discovery Center student (Violet Shebby) earned their 1st dan (degree) black belts in Tae Kwon Do under the mentorship of Grand Master Daniel Chosczcyk. Their black belt certificates are issued by the Global Traditional Taekwondo Federation, and are also recognized by the International TKD Federation, the World TKD Federation, and Kukkiwon (a separate branch of the World TKD Federation).

This trio is the second batch of black belts produced here at Kaleidoscope--last April, Amanda and Deborah Knapp (mother and daughter) earned their black belts. The Knapp family now boasts of a black belt mother, two daughters (Deb, 20, and Amelia,15) and a son (Nathan, 18). The oldest Knapp child, Samson, graduated high school with a a green belt/black stripe (halfway to black belt), and the youngest, Juliet (12), has a red belt, which is the color before black.

While Grand Master Dan has taught students of all ages, abilities, and ranks, his Kaleidoscope and Discovery Center students are special to him as being the only ones he has instructed from the beginning all way through their Tae Kwon Do journey. Grand Master Dan models a lifestyle of commitment and dedication to education and continued growth to his students.

In March of 2025, Grand Master Dan was named the Michigan president of GTTF, and he designated Kaleidoscope L'Anse as the headquarters for Michigan's GTTF branch. In November of 2025, he was able to test for his 7th dan black belt at the 2025 GTTF Global Summit in South Korea. At the Global Summit, he was named Professor in Gyeokpa (board breaking), and had the honor of sharing his methods of teaching board breaking with summit attendees--some of whom outranked him. (Black belts ranks go up to 10th dan.) He received excellent feedback on his techniques in board breaking with the hands to make it both safer and more effective.

Looking to the future of Tae Kwon Do at Kaleidoscope, there is another mother-child duo that will be eligible to test for their black belts come December and many other students on the path to follow behind them. Registration for Summer Classes (L'Anse and Hancock) and Fall Classes (L'Anse and Hancock) is open. Classes are for ages 5 and up (yes, even adult!) Got questions?
